Volunteers — Third Lanark — have always been able to bustle the North End players, and this game proved no exception. Under cold weather, North End faced a a excepcional test against Third Lanark. Due to a leg injury, the Prestonians lost Bob Howarth, thus had to place Geordie Drummond, who still was progressing during the first matches, as full-back.
The defenders displayed a poor performance with them missing kicks, and the tackling, once so prominent a feature in the play of the North End, was occasionally ludicrous.
The forwards, however, played well, their dribbling and passing being very fine, and with a little more shooting in front of goal they would have stood better at the close.
Coincidentally, this match ended with the same result as the one on 28/08/1886.
