The first half was a reflection of constant frustrations on the part of the Londrina team. After all, the chances were created, but without any conclusion in adding goals to the scoreboard. Sheffield Wednesday's defensive system, in turn, was quite effective against Arsenal's vanguard. The first half, dominated by the home team, still ended in a draw.
The other 45 minutes were marked and highlighted as the most sensational of the season for a single reason: Alex James' hat-trick.
CHARLIE BUCHAN: Arsenal gained a clear lead over their rivals, thanks to a hat-trick by Alex James, his first since joining the London team. Alex has long provided the openings. Now, with the clever Bastin to scheme and plan at inside-right, I expect James to figure much more frequently in the champions' scoring list. W. H. BEE: There have been some mighty roars at the Arsenal Stadium, but I have never heard such a shout as came in the seventy-seventh minute of the match with Sheffield Wednesday, when Alex James — "the genius who can't score goals" — put his third for the afternoon past Brown.
Performing his usual game in the first half, the Scto genius decided to move forward to complete the moves himself, thus leaving the scheming to inside-right Cliff Bastin. Precisely, Alex James acted almost at the edge of the penalty box. He, however, was still distributing, but this time he constantly moved forward to complete the plays himself. In just over twenty minutes, Alex James had scored a hat-trick.
Before the match ended, Bastin, with a long-distance shot, scored the last goal for the London team.
