THE STAR OF THE MAIN EVENT
The first match of the tournament for Scotland was against Ireland, which was converted into a thrashing result. Robert Walker did not play the match.
For the second match of the edition — v. Wales —, the Scottish Selectors attempted a right-side combination of Mark Bell and Robert Walker. This combination generated too much doubt. After all, Bell would be making his first cap for Scotland, in addition to being out of position, as the young forward played on the outside left for Heart of Midlothian. This would be a combination that was eventually a bet on the right side.
The match against Wales was a real complete disaster for the Scottish team which, through their poor performance in circumstances that demanded a different style, could easily have lost their first match to the home team. Bobbie Walker's performance, as well as his team's overall performance, was far below expectations. Many said it did not work out with Mark Bell on the right wing. The right wing acted almost independently of the entire forward line, with a level of combination not consistent with the usual quality.
Robert Walker.
The second match played by Walker — Scotland's third — was the main one of the entire tournament. As it could not be otherwise, the England v. Scotland had made another decision.
On completely precarious ground full of mud, the decisive match was played. The Scottish selectors selected Heart of Midlothian's crack forward as outside right, thus pairing on the right wing with John Campbell, from Celtic F.C. Directly facing a defensive system composed of W. J. Oakley and Ernest Needham, Walker would possess one of the most formidable barriers already proposed by the English. He, however, did very well. As time passed, Walker adjusted well to the match, being an unstoppable force on the right side. His performance was mentioned as one of the main highlights of the meeting. For many, the brilliant Scottish forward was the best player of the match.
JAMES CATTON: Campbell proved a splendid partner for Walker, who was in great form. To my mind, the young Heart of Midlothian player was too tricky for
Oakley.
"BAULDIE": Our right wing was the better of the too, and Walker, on a surface that suggested wading, was again a success, and he and Campbell made our best wing.
The battle between England and Scotland ended in a draw. Consequently, England were the winners of the tournament. Bobbie Walker, in turn, did not start the tournament well, due to his performance against Walkes, but he was outstanding in the main match of the championship — regarded as the best footballer by many of the experts. Although he was not used to play in the same position as at his club, he has proven to be a versatile footballer on the right side, able to adapt to the demanding style of play in his position, whether scheming in the middle, or being a skillful outside forward.
