URUGUAY - YUGOSLAVIA 7-0
— Ferdinand Scheinost | 31/05/1924 —
This match, played at the Colombes stadium, deserved a much larger attendance, as what the representatives of South America showed on their debut was so dazzling that it suddenly put them in the forefront of the favorites.
Insiders have long known how advanced football is played in Uruguay. We still remember well the defeat of the excellent Teplitzer team 5-1, a defeat so heavy that no one even wanted to believe in its regularity. In the last weeks before the Olympiad, the Uruguayans played 6 generally winning matches in Spain under Spanish referees, a feat that no other team in the world has achieved so far. It was therefore known who the Uruguayan team was and its victory was tipped. But no one expected such an overwhelming disaster to occur, which could have been even greater if not for the brilliant performance of Vrđuka in the goal.
Any fables about the raw game of the South Americans are pure fiction. On the contrary, they play fine and technically virtuosic football, with great shooting being one of their greatest strengths. With their technical maturity and quick start to the ball, they remind us of Bolton Wanderers, but they are even faster. Even the half-backs are excellent, and especially the black man playing at right half enjoyed understandable attention. We cannot yet give a definite opinion about the defensive lines, because the Yugoslavs have not yet been able to force them into action.
The Yugoslavia game was the only big disappointment. We didn't even want to believe our eyes that it could be the same Yugoslavia, which managed to force a draw on us a year ago. The attack, except for Babić, is slow and uncertain. The half-backs completely disappointed, especially Rupec and Rodin. Both defenders had a difficult and responsible job, under which they finally collapsed.
Brief course of the game: The very beginning of the game suggests a tough fight. During alternating attacks, the Yugoslavs are surprised by a quick onslaught and in the 25th minute. Uruguay leads 3-0. The Yugoslavs recover and make several nice attacks, which remain unused due to the laziness of the inside left.
In the second half, the Yugoslavs attack again, but they are soon exhausted. Then a game of "cat and mouse" begins, and only Vrđuka's top performance saves the Yugoslav national team from a terrible defeat.
