ARE ARGENTINE FOOTBALLERS WORTH THE URUGUAYANS?
— Gabriel Hanot | 09/06/1925 —
Football does not disarm. Paris imitates the example of Barcelona, where football is played virtually from one end of the year to the other. Last Thursday, the Uruguayans, passing through Paris, provided a good match against the Red Star-Olympique squad. Yesterday, it was the turn of the Argentines of Boca Juniors. Next Sunday, the Entente will face Club Wacker, from Munich, returning from Spain. On June 28, at the Colombes stadium, if the field is free, an Argentina-Uruguay meeting is planned.
Who would win this game between South Americans? The spectators who attended the Boca-Entente match yesterday at the Bergeyre stadium seemed to consider the Uruguayans as superior to the Argentines. Their reasoning was based on the fact that Boca won by 4 to 2, while Uruguay had triumphed by 6 to 0. But the Entente had put together a much stronger team yesterday than that of Thursday. Chayriguès played better, Huvier was a fast and determined full-back, the half-backs Bel and Bonnardel worried the Argentinian forwards; finally, the Parisian attack line showed some bite.
The Argentines play a less theatrical football, less rich in personal exploits than that of the Uruguayans. However, their game has its own special qualities. Their team-mates, being taller, heavier and more athletic, have less of a penchant for fine-tuning, for feints and breathless dodges. Their method is simpler, more direct and more perceptive.
The decision of their full-backbacks, their half-backs, the penetrating power of their robust and heavy centre-forward Seoane, the speed of their inside left Garasini eloquently reflected the difference in tactics and style which separates the Argentines from their neighbors.
Should we regret this football season prolonged beyond any limit? No, since the public takes a liking to it and these meetings are filled with encouragement, examples, demonstrations. In ordinary championship times, players do not have the opportunity to learn from the spectacle of big teams. Let's hope that they are now taking advantage of the superb opportunities available to them.
