In the first match of the Copa América 2024, played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, against Canada, Messi demonstrated a notorious inaccuracy in his shots — an uncharacteristic aspect of him. The Argentinian star wasted clear chances to score against the opponent's goal, especially trying to chip the ball over a defender and the goalkeeper. While trying to dribble, the captain got dispossessed from the ball most of the times. 

The match, however, reflected a Messi more focused on the subject of the pass. His passes were punctual and precise, especially when he reversed the side of the game, from right to left, thus targeting Marcos Acuña's advances. Messi, moreover, was involved in Argentina's two scoring opportunities, through passes seeking an advance from a teammate, directly setting up the second goal of the Albiceleste.

This meeting against Canada made Messi the only player with the most matches played in the Copa América. The record was previously shared with goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone.
