WHAT MR. FODOR SAID
— Unknown | 27/12/1922 —
The very kind secretary of the MTK, at the Continental Hotel, gladly agreed to our interrogation:
Dr. Fodor: You believe that we had a real desire to measure the strength of our team with those of Barcelona, a team whose fame has grown very rapidly in just a few years and which arouses lively curiosity in Central Europe. There, where continental football supremacy has resided until now, Barcelona is considered the "big star" of the West. Athletic Bilbao is also known but Barcelona enjoys more prestige.
— ...?
Dr. Fodor: The MTK-Barcelona matches have shown me that this prestige is fair. They may not have the technique as perfect, as scientific as most of the great teams in Central Europe, but Barcelona makes up for this with an extraordinary speed and liveliness that makes them extremely dangerous. I already expected these characteristics in the Spanish game, but not to such a high degree and with such effectiveness.
» MTK has played in its usual way, in its best form, except in the shoot. Our forwards are great shooters, they have a universal reputation for it and here they have been very unfortunate in that regard. Especially Schaffer and Orth, great goal-scorers, have had little success in the shoot. The nature of the terrain may have influenced this.
— ...?
Dr. Fodor: I think that Barcelona has enough category to face and beat any team on their field. If they went abroad, if they visited Central Europe, I think they would not obtain the magnificent results that they obtain here, but, without a doubt, their results would be very honorable and would confirm their class in the eyes of the whole world. A Barcelona tour on the outside would be convenient, because until now there are many people who believe that Barcelona's successes are only due to always playing in their field.
— ...?
Dr. Fodor: The nation with the highest level of football, I think, is Czechoslovakia. After it, Spain (unless Barcelona is a unique and exceptional team) must be at the same level as Austria, Hungary and Bavaria.
— ...?
Dr. Fodor: From Barcelona, Samitier and Piera seemed to me to be hors-class players, true super-internationals, who would be admired in any field and nation. The public seemed correct and very sportive to us. And certainly we came with a certain caution, because he had appeared to us as very exalted.
— ...?
Dr. Fodor: Undoubtedly, MTK in their country's championship plays a little harder than here in a friendly match and with very noble opponents, but their game is not based on the abuse of physical strength, but on passing technique. I think this is much more perfect than that of Barcelona, but this one, I repeat, compensates for the lower precision with greater liveliness and speed. I think the middle ground should be ideal football. Hungarian football has been formed from the beginning by English professional coaches and has acquired the same characteristics of the professional teams except, of course, the moral characteristic of making football a profession.
— ...?
Dr. Fodor: We consider the results fair as the game has developed and we would have also admitted the possibility of a defeat. For us it has been a great pleasure to compete with Barcelona and we want to see them in our fields, where now with the FTC and the UTE, we share national supremacy.
