WHAT MR. BOAS SAID
— Unknown | 27/12/1922 —
The gentleman referee, a millionaire who is passionate about football and who referees for pleasure, tells us:
Boas: The MTK-Barcelona matches have been two of the best I have refereed or watched.
— ...?
Boas: I already knew Spanish football, since I have been to Spain before and knew Barcelona, Athletic and Madrid.
— ...?
Boas: MTK played in top form, but were unhappy in the shoot. Barcelona has been a worthy rival of his. I think that Barcelona would obtain very promising results, even resounding victories, if they went abroad. It would be best if they did so to be able to judge their exact worth. I believe that anywhere, with a neutral referee, they would win, draw or lose by a very few matches, whether in Prague, Vienna or Budapest.
— ...?
Boas: I have attended Spain's unveiling in Antwerp and have been closely following their successive international matches. I believe that it is difficult to beat the Spanish representative team and that on the continent, only the nations of Central Europe can be their worthy adversaries.
— ...?
Boas: I am Dutch, and I sincerely believe that Holland would lose fatally in a match with Spain.
— ...?
Boas: Samitier is a true international ace and I also liked Piera extremely. I know and have seen Zamora play and I consider him, perhaps, the best amateur goalkeeper in Europe.
— ...?
Boas: The public seemed correct to me, although as everywhere, there is a core of fans who do not appreciate more than what may suit their favorites. But, I repeat, the public's judgment seemed very correct and impartial to me.
— ...?
Boas: I have been refereeing for 13 years and have refereed numerous international matches. I have recently been requested for the next Germany-Italy, but I have not been able to accept because my business prevented me from doing so.
— ...?
Boas: In refereeing I try to faithfully interpret the spirit of the regulations. Punishment, especially, when it seems to me to be of bad intention, because sport requires nobility above all. On the other hand, I only grant penalties for handball when I consider them undoubtedly voluntary.
— ...?
Boas: In Holland, the refereeing of Championship matches is difficult, since there is a lot of love for betting and this generates a very great anger and exaltation in those who lose the money, as the team they have bet on loses. Here in Spain there may be sporting passion, but there is also speculative passion.
— ...?
Boas: I found the field magnificent in terms of accommodating the public. But as far as the field of play is concerned, it is a pity that it still does not have a gazon.
— ...?
Boas: I know that in Spain, in Catalonia and in Vizcaya, there are especially good referees, but I also know that it happens to them like almost everyone else: "heroes and martyrs are not appreciated in their own country."
— ...?
Boas: The Sweden-Spain match, played in Barcelona, I think Spain should win. The Belgium-Spain played in Belgium is more difficult, but Spain can also win it. As for France-Spain, I think France will experience a defeat similar to last year.
— ...?
Boas: I still have one aspiration to fulfill and that is to be an official referee of the English League, which is very difficult for a foreign referee to achieve.
