URUGUAY IS STILL URUGUAY
— Louis Delblat | 04/06/1928 —
The long-awaited big match between Uruguay, Olympic Champion, and Germany, with great ambition, was played yesterday. Uruguay qualified brilliantly for the semi-finals by beating Germany by 4 goals to 1 (half-time: 2-0).
It was the clash between two methods: agility and suppleness got the better of power and cold method.
The match was played in front of a considerable crowd. In this crowd, 10,000 Germans, who had come specially to Amsterdam, were waiting for the success of their colors. Their disappointment was great.
Uruguay wore high and firm his title of Olympic Champion. Andrade and Scarone did not play, but Petrone was present; he scored three goals, the fourth being obtained by the brown Castro, with a cut hand.
Germany played very brutally. As a result, the game was chopped up. Two German players, Kalb and Hofmann, and a Uruguayan, Nasazzi, were sent off. And part of the crowd whistled at the referee because he had been energetic! There was electricity in the air.
For the semi-finals, two countries have already qualified: Argentina and Uruguay. South America is in a brilliant position!
Today, Portugal will play against Egypt, and Italy and Spain will be present again. And then, we will know the four semi-finalists.
