Right at the start of their campaigns in the edition, both teams would face each other in the Round of 16. Previously, F.K. Austria, without Matthias Sindelar and Walter Nausch, had eliminated S.K. Slovan Wien 10:1. S.K. Rapid, in turn, beat Neubaer S.C. 17:2, reflecting the true scoring ability of their inside trio.
The renowned referee Hans Frankenstein was appointed to lead the match.
Wiener Cup, Round of 16: 19/02/1933, Sunday, 14:30. S.K. Rapid — F.K. Austria 4:6 (2:3) Place: Pfarrwiese, Hütteldorf. Referee: Hans Frankenstein (Vienna). Linesmen: ? Estimated attendance: 15.000. S.K. Rapid: Raftl — Jestrab, Czejka — Wagner, Smistik, Pesser — Ostermann, Kaburek, Bican, Binder, Luef. Coach: Eduard Bauer. F.K. Austria: Billich — Graf I., Nausch — Najemnik, Mock, Gall — Molzer, Schippek, Sindelar, Spechtl, Viertl. Coach: Karl Schrott. Goals: Bican(20min, 83min), Binder(37min[free-kick], 87min) — Viertl(14min, 40min[free-kick], 75min), Spechtl(35min), Schippek(62min), Sindelar(68min[penalty]).
In the first few minutes of the match, Raftl collided with Molzer. The local goalkeeper had to leave the field and go straight to the hospital. Luef, Rapid's highly versatile footballer, took his place as goalkeeper. Rapid had practically started the match with only ten players.
In addition to the high rivalry between both teams, this beginning was a catalyst for a match marked by several fights, collisions and discussions. It is significant that Dr. Mauro, the well-known board member of the Italian Football Association, in whose homeland the game is very tough, described the meeting as rough.
MATCH REPORT: The game then became extremely robust, even brutal at times.
The first half was played with a certain brutality, in which some players could have been sent off. F.K. Austria took the lead through Rudolf Viertl. A few minutes later, Josef Bican equalized, but Spechtl put his team back in front. However, the advantage was short-lived, as Franz Binder added a fine free kick. To round off the first half, Viertl scored his second goal.
After this sequence of goals being constantly scored by both sides, F.K. Austria took control of the game, thus scoring three goals in a row. The scorers being Schippek, Sindelar and, once again, Viertl.
However, the last fifteen minutes were the moments when S.K. Rapid needed to recover. After a few changes in their forward line, the team was effective again. A penalty was awarded to Rapid, but Binder wasted the opportunity to reduce the opponent's lead.
Consequently, in just three minutes, the Hütteldorfers added two more goals - Bican and Binder.
With just a few minutes left in the match, goalkeeper Billich was injured and had to leave the field. Sindelar took his place in goal. With both teams having only 10 men on the field, nothing else happened in the next minutes. F.K. Austria had qualified for the next round. S.K. RAPID
The Hütteldorfers' performance is to be commended. Despite playing with only ten players, without a true goalkeeper, playing with a weakened forward line and against an opponent of the class of F.K. Austria, Rapid achieved a very good result.
This result, moreover, raised doubts as to whether Rapid would have won if they had been at full strength. After all, both teams were very evenly matched in terms of class.
Regarding the aforementioned fighting spirit, Smistik should be highlighted above the others. His sacrifice was evident, demonstrating that he was in every match and reflecting extraordinary stamina.
Binder initially started off very slowly, and the absence of Luef on the left side meant the inside forward's performance dropped. Later, when Kaburek was put alongside him, Binder found his game. F.K. AUSTRIA
The whole line of half-backs was at a high level, but Mock still stood out from his comrades.
