The Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, from Milan, has compiled a list of the best players in Continental Europe. Some positions had only four representatives; others end with five. The rankings, of course, ended up generating a lot of discussion in the main debate media. Published in July, the list, however, is interesting to look at. From left to right, here is the list from the 1939 edition:
Goalkeepers: Hiden, Olivieri, Raftl, Platzer, Ceresoli. Right full-backs: Minelli, Foni, Sesta, Janes, Pavetick. Left full-backs: Rava, Caldenhove, Schamaus, Bíró, Daučík. Right half-backs: Dudás, Kupfer, Springer, Lázár, Adamek. Centre half-backs: Andreolo, Vernati, Nožíř, Jordan, Bouček. Left half-backs: Kopecký, Lechner, Diagne, Kitzinger, Locatelli. Right wingers: Říha, Biavati, Aston, Lehner, Bickel. Right insiders: Meazza, Hahnemann, Ben Barek, Gellesch, Stroh. Centre-forwards: Piola, Bican, Puricelli, Korany, Binder.
